The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team that competes in the National Basketball Association. They are one of the NBA’s oldest franchises. They were known as the Philadelphia Warriors from 1946 to 1962, then the San Francisco Warriors from 1962 to 1971. They now play at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. The Warriors have won six NBA championships, in 1947, 1956, 1975, 2015, 2017, and 2018.
Here are some fun facts about the Warriors that’ll make you seem really sports savvy and informed at the next viewing party:
~ In 2016, the Warriors broke the record for most wins in a regular season with 73 victories and only 9 losses. The 72-10 record was held by the 1996 Chicago Bulls.
~ One of the players on that team was their current coach Steve Kerr.
~ On the brink of elimination in the 2016 semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Warriors rallied and became the 10th team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven series. ~ The team originally called Philadelphia home and won the league’s first-ever championship way back in 1947. ~The team moved West in 1962 as the San Francisco Warriors, dropping the offensive Native American imagery. Nine years later, they became the Golden State Warriors.
According to the website Dunk or Three, the Warriors are also known as The Dubs. So, what’s the backstory behind this alternate nickname? It doesn’t have the same history as the team’s official nickname. This one arose from a shorthand pronunciation of the first letter of their nickname.
Fans frequently abbreviate their team names in order to refer to them. Consider the New York Yankees being referred to as the Yanks, or the New England Patriots being referred to as the Pats. Dunk or Three pointed out that calling to the Warriors as “Wars” doesn’t sound quite right. So, what should Warriors fans do? They shorten the pronunciation of Warriors’ first letter. “Dub” is merely an abbreviation for “W.” So, that’s how the Warriors became both the Warriors and the Dubs.
